Style report: What people are wearing to the Saturday farmers market
Santa Barbara street style at its finest
There is no better place to scope Santa Barbara style than at the Saturday farmers market. Some of my earliest memories are chasing my mom (dressed head to toe in Krista Larson) around tables laden with peaches and heirloom tomatoes. My mom dresses up for the market — as she should! In Santa Barbara, it isn’t just a place to buy groceries, it’s a place to see and be seen, to chat it up with farmers and friends and feel the full sense of community that living in a small town can inspire.
Last Saturday, I doubled up on my mission to buy fresh basil and figs by turning a keen eye toward what people were wearing. The results were delightful — a mix of beloved brands, enviable vintage, and expertly styled fast fashion.
Jenn and Keaton
This was the first couple I stopped to ask for a photo — I loved how relaxed their choices looked, while still feeling intentional. Jenn is in a vintage sweatshirt, Buck Mason jeans, and Birks. Keaton is sporting a Buck Mason top and Industry of All Nations pants, with Crocs that he got for his sister’s wedding (!).
Nadia (aka the didgeridoo lady)
Nadia is a farmers market icon and plays the didgeridoo there every Saturday. Last weekend, she was wearing an incredible matching set (origin unknown), comfy looking mesh slides, and a headdress that she made.
Olive and Patrick
I tried to talk to more strangers than friends on this excursion, but Olive and Patrick were an exception — some of our closest buds, out on a Saturday in a Goodwill Grinch sweatshirt and Crocs (hers) and a Filson sweatshirt, J Crew pants, and SeaVees (his).
Tillie and Andrew
Tillie’s outfit really got me — a white mesh tank under a white Urban Outfitter’s jumpsuit, paired with blue and white flip flops. Andrew’s jeans likewise did not disappoint: Todd Snyder in a mint green wash, with a Zara t-shirt and On sneaks.
Tyler
Tyler let me interrupt his conversation with fellow chefs to talk about his very classic Santa Barbara fit: Volcom shorts, a RVCA button up, Stance socks (we love a man who knows the brand of socks he’s wearing) and a hat from his friend’s sandwich shop.
Rachna, Nole, and Azealia
A true Santa Barbara family, Rachna and Nole run the Apiary and are famous for making the most beautiful children known to man. She’s wearing a hat from Jake and Jones paired with Doen pants, a Kara Thoms wrap top, and Pons shoes. He’s in Carhartt pants, an Old Navy t-shirt, and Rainbows. Her bag is Baggu, his is Carhartt, and Ms. Azealia is wearing Native boots (we’re told they also serve as effective bicycle breaks).
Susan and Joan
These lovely ladies from Australia seemed…startled when I asked to take a photo of their outfits for a style newsletter called Picnic. And yet, they played along. Joan’s Brat green fit is from Marshalls, and Susan’s is from Australia (that’s all she would give me). She was more forthcoming about her jewelry: one necklace is from Malta and has her grandchildren’s names inscribed, another says “Nana” and was a gift from her daughter-in-law.
Emily
Emily was my Saturday style crush. A vintage sweatshirt from Scout in LA, Peachy Den pants (this photo doesn’t do them justice: a modern take on a 90’s cargo pant, so perfect I had to buy them shortly after), a Khaite bag, and Birks. Plus, you know how I feel about a pop of red!
Maile
Maile’s whole outfit is thrifted: an oversized camo t-shirt over a linen dress with black ballet flats and a black-and-tan wicker bag.
Sophie and Sean
I’m biased, but to me there is nothing better than a belly-out pregnant lady — and Sophie is pregnant with twins. She’s wearing a tank top from Zara and slouchy American Eagle jeans. Sean is in a Zara men’s button down and Sol Angeles linen pants (she also had the best earring stack I’ve ever seen, but I got neither a photo nor a breakdown. Alas!).
Zoë (me) and Ava
Cami influenced me to buy these Nike Cortez sneakers and I haven’t looked back. I got them on Depop for half price. I’m also wearing my favorite sunglasses from Jake and Jones (back in stock, but in-store only), my husband’s button up, and a jean jacket from Westward General. Ava is wearing head to toe Zara (tryna quit) along with strawberry socks from my sister (Ava calls her “Titi”) and shoes from my aunt’s store in Seattle.
After market, we made an Italian-inspired feast: trafilata al bronzo from The Eddy, fresh pesto, heirloom and cherry tomatoes, and parm. Not pictured: a delicious dessert of figs and a super seed cookie from Oat Bakery. Heaven!
Bite-Size Advice
I need one formal work outfit that I can wear out when it’s cold-ish and that doesn’t read as too girly. Any suggestions? - AB
This Auralee suit from Jake and Jones has inspired my work-fit ideas lately. I like the idea of pairing it with a knit top to make it slightly less formal. A ballet flat or Mary Jane makes this getup feel a little fem. And a metallic clutch for an unexpected pop. Tada!
The Warehouse Sale
Jake and Jones is having a massive warehouse sale with Ali Golden August 23-25, with discounts of up to 80% off (!!!). Cami and I stopped by a couple days early to snag some items. Here are a few of our finds:
