How to wear long shorts
If last summer was all about the short shorts, this summer I’m eagerly leaning into longer styles.
Bermudas are in season and I’ve naturally been pilfering my husband’s shorts drawer for more options. (Turns out, I love the fit and look of men’s size medium shorts/pants. Maybe you do, too?)
It’s been fun to play with the versatility of longer shorts. My main piece of advice? Do not be afraid of the length! You might be surprised by how you feel in a different silhouette — it might be cuter than you thought!
As I’ve said: I love a short short. But, these days, I’ve been feeling more confident, creative, and sexy when my shorts hit the top of the knees or the mid thigh.
Here are my tips for going on your own journey with long shorts.
Keep it cute and casual
My most recent foray into bermuda shorts was with these beautiful and light mfpen classic shorts (from Jake and Jones Menswear). They’re suiting shorts, so they’re pleated and bring a little extra masculinity to the look.

The cropped white tee — by far my FAVE tee on the market right now — and the jewelry bring the outfit back down to earth and add the right amount of girlishness. And the shoes — a blend of ballet flats and sneakers in dark, bold colors — offer the edginess I often strive for in my looks.
Below are the same shorts, this time styled with a tank and chanclas. Could easily be replicated with a pair of more traditional sneakers for the same effect. The shorts make this otherwise very casual look feel a little more put together and chic.

This last outfit might be me in a nutshell? I love the look and feel of my husband’s athletic shorts paired with my trusty Swedish Hasbeens. It’s sporty, but sexy. Masculine, with feminine touches. And comfortable to boot.
I even like exercising in these shorts and have found a new sense of freedom in moving/running/hiking/lifting without worrying my arse is hanging out.

Dress it up

Pair your bermudas with a special blouse — one that brings the drama or adds an exquisite touch. I’ve been collecting huipiles for over 10 years (and wearing them since I was a baby). They are easily some of the most special and meaningful pieces I own, some gifted to me and others thoughtfully gathered from years of travel to Mexico (and some from my hometown, San Antonio). The huipil above elevates the outfit with color and expert craftsmanship.
Adding more formal shoes (even if they’re jellies ;)) can instantly dress up your look, too.
Balance textures
Long shorts can sometimes feel like you’re back in P.E. class. I’ve found it’s easier to avoid this by adding texture. This helps make a look feel more sophisticated, and subtly brings a certain cool factor to the ‘fit.
Try a knit sweater with suede shorts (above), or go for a silky, pressed button down with denim shorts (below) for some considered contrast.
Get freaky with it

Bermuda shorts put the “fun” in “funky.” Embrace the funk and keep things big from top to bottom. You could carry this even into the shoes, or go for a more dainty (yet still slightly funky) option like I did in the photo.
If your shorts have some give in ‘em, roll the waist a couple times. This can jazz things up in just the right way. It’s an effortless touch that adds texture and a bit more dimension to an outfit.
If you’re still unsure about the long shorts you’re wearing, then divert attention to a similarly long, delicate piece of fabric or scarf hanging along the side. In my experience, bold color is best for this detail.

One last thing: It’s been a pleasure serving as editor-in-chief of Picnic! Co-founding this project nearly a year ago alongside Jen, Zoë, and Alex has been exciting, challenging, and creatively fulfilling.
This is my last month editing, but I will still contribute stories to Picnic (and my personal Substack here) when I can. Thank you all so much for your support thus far. I’m excited to see where Picnic goes❤︎
